Jakarta Street Children

In 1997 the Asian financial crisis hit hard many South East asian countries, specially Indonesia. Extreme poverty pushed thousands of children out of the countryside into the capital, Jakarta, with the hope to find a job to support their children. In the 80’s there were less than 50’000 street children in the country. In 2004 the number rose to more than 500’000 street kids. 60% of them found themselves begging in Jakarta.
